The target audience for our music video is female that are 17-18 years old. These girls will be in full time education and quite clever.
They would spend most of their free time; hanging out with mates, at local gigs (such as the junction or corn exchange), at starbucks or working.
This target audience will most likely wear; converse, dirty jeans and band t-shirts.
Also they probably play an instrument themselves like guitar, they will spend most of their money on school supplies and coffee.
The audience that will buy her music will probably either buy it on iTunes or download it for free on things like BitTorrent as opposed to buying the cd in a store, also they are probably already fans of Becky's music.
Me and Philippa are sending an e-mail to Simon from the Junction about what we would like for our shoot there on 22nd. The e-mail is;
..........'Things that Me (Alie) and Philippa would like for our shoot at the Junction.
- We would like a stage, with a stool for the singer to sit on and play her guitar, with a mircophone that has a lead that looks as if it is plugged in somewhere. - Basic lights, pointing down on the singer so she seem central. - Black background behind stage. - if possible a microphone that looks like it is plugged in at guitar level so that it looks like its there to make the guitar as loud as her voice.
Also we would need to film at the Junction on Thursday 22nd as our singer can not come on the other date.'.................
Dave gave us the link to a website that will help us in changing the colours of our footage. The link is http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/basic_sky_replacement/
This is a video that shows how to changed colours of things like skys and colours in the shot.
...This video shows how to do it in after effects although we are going to try to do the colour editing in final cut.
This is the car we are using for our music video shoot. A VW Golf, it is Holly's cars...we will use this car to do all the shoots of becky in the car and out of the car.
Holly will be driving the car around will we are filming in it and she will also in some parts be in the shot as she is getting into the car turning the car on.
Today just before me and Philippa starting filming our test shots, we decided to get used to using the HD camera. In both of mine and Philippa's opening sequence projects we didn't use the cameras so this morning we didn't know how to use it. We found it quite easy to use, to start with we learnt to changed the settings to HD then started filming us just sitting outside college on the floor just so we could see if we could work it. The first time we filmed a couple of seconds of footage of us, it didn't have any sound when we watched it back, this is before we did not have the sound input setting rigth, but we changed them and now we know how to change it. Playing around with the camera first really help, if we had not done this and we hadn't done some test shots to practice things like zooming, and we had jumped straight into filming not knowing anything about the settings we would have filmed with any sound and not knowing if we had any of the settings right. I now feel really confident to using the HD camera for mine and Philippa's music video as I know how to use it and what to expect from the camera when filming our final footage.
Today (Thursay 8th) our class went to the Junction for a session on marketing, but whilst we were there everyone that is planning on using the Junction as a setting for their music video had a chance to talk to the man who will be setting up the technical things for our shoot. Me and Philippa spoke to Simon (technical man) about what we are thinking about and what we want for our shoot.
We told him that we would like to have a stage with a plain black background. Nothing to over the top just a simple set with a stool for her to sit on her whilst playing, a microphone for her because she is singing and we chose to have simple white and blue lighting, white in front of her to help show her face, and blue behind her to add a nice effect of the blue light against the black background...also the blue light behind her should look good against her dark clothing a hair. He said that that is fine and suggest some ideas to us; about coloured lighting to show a slight glow around her and make her stand out and possible some hazing lighting. We have to now e-mail him soon once we have decided exactly what we want so that he can set it up for out shoot on Thursday 22nd.
For the shoot in the car scenes...this is an image of where we have planned to have to two people in the car sitting, the driver in the front seat and Becky in the back on the opposite side to the drive, and she's leaning against the window. This is only a rough plan, as it may change depending on how easy or hard it will be to film with me and Philippa in the car aswell.
Although when filming and making our music video we do not have to spend any money that we would have to if we were making a music video in the real industry, such as;
- camera rental
- HD tapes
- computer/laptop
- editing software (final cut, after effects)
- other equipment (head phones/mics)
- settings/locations rentals (Junction)
- props
- costumes
- lighting
- actors
- people (camera person/sound/editor/costume and make-up people)
...We do not have to pay anyone to work with us, we are doing it ourselves and using our friends in the video
...We have the equipment as we are using equipment and software from the college
...The costume and make-up are being brought in by the actor
...The locations are either public places or we are able to use for free (Junction)
The only things that we have to spend money on will be;
- Transport (buses/trains) to and from the locations of out shoot
- Money for the petrol we will need to drive around in the car
The health and safety which we will have to consider when shooting the footage for out music video.
Shooting in town and car;
...town will be very busy and with a lot of people about this will mean that we will have to take a lot of care in case of any equipment could get damaged
...we will have to also make sure that we do not get any people around town in the shots, as they may not won't to be in the shot
...when around town we need to be careful of traffic in case any equipment or people accidently fall into the road
...must wear seat belts inside the car when the car is moving, as if were to get into an accident then we are likely to be seriously injured
Shooting in the Junction;
...when shooting in the Junction we will have to make sure that we do not trip over or damage any equipment of the Junction
...make sure that we don't break or damage any; staging, stool, or microphone that belongs to the Junction
Shooting in Sawston;
...we have to consider some of the same things as in town; traffic and people
...being rear or crossing main road could cause injury
...crossing train tracks to get to the field, must do very careful and be very aware of possible issues
...field is near river, make sure don't fall in or drop any equipment into the water
...some parts of land around the field are private property and we must make sure that we do not go onto or film any of this land as the owners may not be very happy with it.
Today (Thursday 8th) me and Philippa went out around Cambridge shooting test footage of Becky walking. We got a lot of shots of her walking and in the shots there are; trees, bushes, grass, road, sky.......so that we can test the effect we want to use. Because in our video we want all of these things edited so that the colours are very bright and/or changing the colours.
Me and Philippa have just found out that our singer will now not be available for the whole of next week which is when we had planned to shoot all of our footage. She is not able to shoot at all next week as she is now going on holiday. So we now plan to shoot the majority of our footage in the next two days.
- Tomorrow (Friday); we are going to shoot in the morning, we will shoot all of the footage in the shots that involve Becky being in and getting out of the car at the Junction. We are using my girlfriend, Holly's, car and will spend the morning driving around Cambridge doing any shots that we need of the car.
- Saturday; we are going to shoot in Sawston, the field shots and the shots of Becky walking on her journey to the field.
Hopefully we will get all of these shots done in the next two days, then the only footage we are missing is the shots of Becky playing on stage at the Junction. We will shoot these shots on Thursday 22nd.
If we don't manage to shoot everything that we had planned or realise that we need to re-shoot some footage, we have planned to film it the Tuesday that Becky gets back from her holiday (20th) ...although this will mean that that footage we film, we'll only have one day to edit for the rough cut deadline on Wednesday 21st.
This is the animatic of mine and Philippa's storyboard. This shows the ordering of our storyboard images and how long they will last. This video shows what footage will go to each parts of the song. This is only the first 1 minute - 19 seconds of the video, this does not include the shots of the field or any other shots that we have planned. This is how the first verse and chorus will look if the shooting goes to the plan of the storyboard.
Ed Lovelace is a music video director and has recently directed his first film. Ed went to Long Road Sixth Form College from 2000 - 2002 where he studied Media. In the Media A-level that he studied he did a lot of the same type of projects that we are doing now. He made a thriller opening sequence, similar to the film opening project that we did in our first year at Long Road. He also, as we are doing now, made a music video. So he basically did nearly the same projects as us and he is now successful director. Althought when Ed was at Long Road the technology was not that same as it is now, they had the very basic iMacs and did not have Final Cut like we do, they used a basic version of iMovie.
After his time at Long Road he went on the study Media at Bournemouth University for three years. At Bournemouth he got lots or opportunities to work and study projects with real life practitioners like the director of Harry Potter and got the opportunity to have real professional actors in his projects. He also did 6 weeks work placement as part of his course, he worked as a runner for a lot of production companies and he said that it was pointless, that it is not a good job to have and doesn't help you in the media industry at all.
Once he finished studing at uni, he went to work for a record company, he told them he would work for free, just to help out on low budget music video shoots. He then started working for a Production Company based in SoHo, London, Called Pulse Films. He has made many music videos; some low budget and some high budget. Some if his music videos are: ...Gallows - 'Abandon Ship'
...Cage the Elephant - 'In One Ear'
...Cage the Elephant - 'Ain't No Rest For The Wicked'
...Cutting Pink with Knives - 'Laser Hannon'
Ed says that he bases a lot of his idea for music video on movies that he has seen, he takes affects and concepts from movies and expands on them to make them into music videos. The first few music videos he made were low budget video with not very well known artists, the budgets of his first few were around £100, such as the video he made for Gallows. Although the video that he made for Cage The Elephant had a budget of about £40,000. When he's planning a music video idea, he does not use storyboarding for his idea like we do and most video directors do. He said that during the process of making a music video the whole video will be complete within two weeks; the average video shoot will have...3 days for the pitch of the idea, 1 week for planning of the video, 1 day for shooting the footage and 3 days for editing.
Ed Lovelace is now moving onto making full length films, he has recently made a documentary type film about a band which left home at the age of 14 and has been touring for 17 years. This film was made in America, and the film starred Viking Moses, and is a film following him around America performing in places such as people houses.
These are the first three pages of Story Boards that me and Philippa have created for the planning of our music video. This is just the drawings for the first part of the music video (first verse and chorus).
The shooting for our music video, the places are quite simple. There will be three main setting for the video; a field, the junction and in town. The junction and in town would be the easiest of the three to get to as every weekday where are in Cambridge and around these areas anyway. Where as the field that we are planning to use in outside Sawston, is more difficult to get to. But all three are very good locations that we can use and go well with what we want to film.
Problems to consider when filming in these settings; In town; it will be very busy and there will be a lot of people around so there could be more of a risk of and accident. Also with a lot of people around we have taken in account that we are going to have to try very hard to not shot where unaware people could be in the shot.
In the field; although with this setting there is not the same risks as in town, the is risks of possibly trespassing on people's private land, so we will have to take a lot of care in where we film and make sure that it is not going upset anyone with us being there.
For our music video we won't really need that many props. The main ones that we will need are; the acoustic guitar that Becky will be playing during the video, the stool she will be sitting on in the performance at the Junction, the lights at the Junction during the performance, the car that she will get in and out of, microphone at the Junction and stage at the Junction.
Me and Philippa have decided that the effect of colours we are trying to achieve would be done a lot easier if we had Becky wearing only black and white costume. So things like black jeans, black or white top and black and white shoes. Also her hair is black so that will work out well for our video. We will also be paling out her face a little bit because that way the if her face is less pinkish then the colour in the shots will stand out more. She will also be wearing black make-up.
This list below will show exactly when Becky is available for shooting.
Monday's - 12:40 - 14:45
Tuesday's - 12:40 - 14:45
Wednesday's - 11:15 - 13:45
Thursday's - 10:00 - 11:50 and also 15:00 onwards
Friday's - 10:00 - 11:50 and also 15:00 onwards
This list below will show when we have free periods to shoot

Wednesday's - 13:00 onwards
Thursday's - 9:00 - 13:00
Friday's - 9:00 - 13:00
From looking at both of these lists, we can see when myself and Alie will be available within the same time as Becky. The times when we are available at the same time are listed below.
Monday's - 12:40 - 13:50
Tuesday's - 12:40 - 14:30

Thursday 1st October - 13:15 First Junction Slot, Becky is free after 3 and may be a possible time to inform her when we will be shooting at the Junction and other shoots.
Friday 2nd October - 13:05 - Planning of animatic and story boarding animatic and finishing- we will get more of an idea of what we want each shot to look like so it will be easier for us to go out and shoot the following week. There is a possibility of meeting up with Becky and Alie in the morning - may be a useful planning time.
Monday 5th October - 9:00 - more animatic work and feedback. This is not a good day to go shooting, as there is not enough time.
Tuesday 6th October - 12:20 - 14:35 slot possible shooting as the shooting site is close by, however we would only be able to have an hour to shoot.
Wednesday 7th October - 9:00 - Planning and possible shooting in the afternoon, this would be a good time if we can find out if Becky is free as college finishes at 12:30.
Thursday 8th October - 13:00 - Junction slot again, Becky is free in a small slot in the morning she is free and she is also free after 3 so this would also be an ideal place to shoot.
Friday 9th October - 13:00 - Long Road time to shoot - morning free so maybe more time to shoot else where with Becky.
(possible time to shoot on Saturday if we can organize everyone to get into town)
Monday 12th October - 9:00 Long Road time shooting and editing
Tuesday 13 October - 12:20 - 14:35 slot possible shooting but again we may only have an hour of shooting time.
Wednesday 14th October - editing and afternoon shooting if we can get Becky to be free.
Thursday 15th October - 13:00 - junction slot and again Becky should be free in the morning for a small slot and after 3.
Friday 16th October - morning shooting and afternoon possibly, just need find out when Becky is free.
