Monday 28th September - Feedback

In class at Coleridge on Monday, me and Philippa presented our pitch for our music video to the rest of the class and Pete.
Many people in the class commented on our pitch saying that it us possible that our music video may get quite boring just having shots of Becky walking around for nearly 4 minutes. People said that maybe we could add the footage of Becky performing at the Junction as part of the actually music video and not just film it as a back up and then we can cut back and forth between this and the footage of the journey to make it more interesting. Also Pete said that making there a lot of variety of shots in the video would stop it getting boring for the audience, different lengths & angles etc.

Also during the feedback the class told us some solo acoustic artists that have made music videos that we could research to get an idea of what kind of music videos other musicians like Becky do. These were musicians like; Newton Faulkner & KT Tunstall.

Setting (Field)

Philippa went out to look for possible settings for the part of our music video that will be filmed in a field. She was looking for a big field that could have the artist sitting in the middle. These are the pictures that Philippa managed to get to help us plan and get a better idea of what the video could look like and what we have to work with.

Rough Version of Pitch

Here is a rough version of  our pitch, which we have pitched today to Pete. This includes our idea for the music video and what we went the video to be like.

Philippa: The artist which we have chosen is called Becky Young, she is a solo, acoustic artist. She has made a few covers, along with her own work and we have chosen one of her own songs, called ‘Time’ (play song)

Alie: Our first idea and so far our only idea is to shoot Becky on her journey to a field. The field would be almost like her ‘gig’ but we would shoot her playing her guitar in the middle of the field towards the end of the video. The video would consist of a range of different shots, as we wanted to have a variety. This could include us shooting her in a car for part of the journey, which would be a close shot and then we would have a shot of her walking part of it which would be a long shot.
We have also considered including the Junction shoot into the video but we haven’t yet thought about how that would fit in but we are still going shoot it, just in case.

Philippa: To make this video a bit more interesting, we wanted to use some effect to add a different feel to the video. We came up with something simple which was to change the colours of footage. We want to keep our artist in black and white but change the colours of everything else around. To start of with, we weren’t too sure on how to do this but after getting advice we found that we could a do a few things make it easier. This could include making sure our artist is wearing black and white and then use final cut to change the colours, this will make it easier to bring out the colours around her.

Wednesday 23rd of September - Visual Effects

We had to make a video on final cut, using colours & shapes, for a music video. We had to do it to the beat of the music to get used to using visual effects to go with the beat of a song, incase we want to use visual effects in our final music video.
Our video isn't very long and was quite easy to do. We choose to do our visual effects video to the song Daft Punk - Around the World.

Wednesday 23rd of September - Feedback of effetcts

In our session at Coleridge last wednesday, we had to find a music video on youtube that we thought had a good effect that we would like to use or take ideas from for our own music video. We chose to use the music video, HIM - gone with the sin, me and Philippa had already posted on our blogs that we like the effect of colours in this music video.

We got a lot of feedback from the class and from Nick and we got some advise from them about how we would go about creating this effect. We were told that one way we could do it is by making our singer completely in black and white and then pick out the colours from the background that we shot. I thought that this would be the easiest, as spending a long time in photoshop or after effects, cutting around our singer or using green screen would be a lot more completed. Now that we have an idea about how to go about doing this effect, we can start testing some shots to see if the classes advise will work, also the feedback will help creating the effect and make it a lot simpler.

Wednesday 16th September

The class was at Coleridge today and as a task we had to find a video that we liked something about an effect that was used in it, that we may incorporate into our own music video. Me and Philippa had already talked about a video that we liked the effects used before the task was set. We had has a discussion about using an effect sort of like the effect use in the video for HIM - Gone With The. We had talk about using the effect of the colours used in this video...because in this video the man is black and white but the rest is in really bright colours.
I can not get the music to embed on here from youtube but the link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZtFLd_wNfI
Here are some screen shots of the effect that we like.

Becky Young

The artist that Me and Philippa are using for our music video is Becky Young.
...This is the picture that Becky has as her profile picture on her myspace. (www.myspace.com/beckyyoungcambridge)
On her myspace she has five songs that she has recorded, two of which are covers and the other four are her own songs. The two songs that me and Philippa are deciding between to use for the music video are two of her own songs; 'Time' & 'Safe'. We like both of these songs and think that there is a lot that we could do with either of them.

Becky Young not has recording of herself on myspace but there are videos of her performing that have been uploaded to youtube. The good thing about having some one that has performed on stage in front of people is that it means they feel comfortable in front of people and cameras. Which means she won't have a problem being in front of the camera when she's shooting for me and Philippa.

These are the two video that are on youtube of her performing, she also has these posted on her myspace.

Working With Philippa

Me and Philippa have decided to work together on the music video project.

We have decided for the idea of our music video, we will use a friend of Philippa's as the artist for our music video, Philippa's friend is called Becky Young. She is a solo artist that sings and plays guitar.
We chose Becky because we feel that she was a lot different than a lot of the artist that other people in the class are using, we also felt that when shooting we would have a larger range of footage. This is because other people in the class are likely to use bands that play very high tempo, rock style music that would limit the possibilities when shooting. Using high tempo music would mean using mostly very quick shots, where as with what we have chosen we could use a wider variety of shot types. Another benefit of using the artist we chose and not a band, would be that when using a band we would have to take all the music equipment (guitars, microphones, drum & amps etc...) where ever we are shooting, but with using Becky all we would need is her and her guitar, which would mean we can use a lot more places as the settings for our music video.

NickelBack Someday - Music Video Analysis

This analysis of Someday by NickelBack was written by both Me and David Pinchen.

The music video to Someday by NickelBack is good because while it does have the traditional footage of the band playing in a stage area, it also includes a narrative which can be seen as a literal translation of the lryics. The narrative that is shown as a separate video to the band, is not immediately understandable as to what is going on, it could be seen as a simple break up,  but somethings do not quite fit as to a break up, such as the shot at about 55 Seconds in where the male character walks through the milk and doesn't leave any footprints. Perhaps not immediately noticeable as fitting with the lyrics, or what seems to be going on with the narrative. Another shot that has been used that would be seen as perhaps a break up scene, but also perhaps slightly weird is that when the female character gets into the car and the male character is outside the car bashing on the windows trying to stop her from leaving, but she doesn't seem to notice that he is there, and also doesn't make any attempt at responding to him.

The scenes where the band are playing the song, they are in the foreground with the background slightly blurred out, perhaps to add emphasis to the band members. Another thing that is generic, and not really noticeable to the audience, is that the band are actually playing to the person/people watching the video, looking directly into the camera. In the scenes that the band are performing for the camera, it's is quite casual. The band are all dressed in typical 'casual' clothes, such as jeans and t-shirts, none of them are dressed up and look as though they may do on a normal day, not a music video. Another part of the scene that makes it look casual is the setting, the setting is just a room with the band and their instruments, unlike some conventional music videos, the band are not in a live performance or on a stage.

There are many scenes in this music video that involve special effects, these special effects are used to show that the characters in the narrative part of the music video are dead. These are things such as when the woman in the narrative steps in the puddle of milk she then leaves milk foot prints on the floor as she walks, where as when the man steps in the puddle of milk, he does not leave any foot prints, as if he hadn't even stepped in the milk. Another piece of special effects is when the woman is in the car accident and walks out of the car as a ghost, as she walks through the crowd, she has a glowing aurora around her.

Lip-Syncing Music Video Task

This is a version of the music lip-syncing video that Me, Matt, Mike, Tara & Kirk recorded.
The purpose of this task was to film a video of us singing along to Dance Wiv Me by Dizzee Rascal. Then once we had filmed it we each had to edit it so that we cut it up and match the song up with the movement of our lips singing the song. This task helped us learn how to match the video with the song, this was a good excericise to get us used to making music videos and lip-syncing and learn other skills that we are going to need when making our final music video.
This video was edited by Matt Leonowicz, I did edit most of my own version of this video but it keeped messing up.
This task went really well, we got a lot of footage to use & that match up quite easily to the music, the only problem were some part were a little hard to get perfectly matched up, so some part are a little out of sync, and the other problem was with my editing when it wouldn't work properly.

We learnt a lot about editing music videos to sync the song to the video, using markers in final cut to match up the audio in the footage we shot (because we have to song playing in the footage) and the actually song audio, having the audio waves showing whilst editing and marking the points where the audio matched helped a lot in getting the audio synced up.
